At Quest, we witness incredible moments. From fighting off nasty roaches to delivering sanitary pads, we’ve seen our fair share of unique quests. But, this beautiful story right here, takes the cake.
What are the odds that we’d be let into the intimate process of preparing for a marriage proposal? Slim…
We thought so too, until we received a quest to help with the planning and execution of a wedding proposal. As it turns out, James, 37, needed help planning for his big day.. Having met his then-girlfriend, Paik Yen, through a dating app in December 2018, James decided that it was time to pop the question after 2 years of dating.
Keen to get down to the deets, we sat down with James to learn more about why he chose Quest for his special day.
- How did you chance upon Quest?
I was searching for marriage proposal ideas and fortunately, Evan reached out to me with a solid proposal. It was my first time hearing about the Quest app and I immediately jumped on board.
Fun fact: This marriage proposal quest is coincidentally our first-ever quest on the platform.
- Why did you choose to outsource help for such an intimate event like a wedding proposal?
Well, I think it’s tough to keep it a secret among friends. Besides, my friends were busy and I didn’t want to trouble them too much. My initial plan was to form a small task force for an hour on the actual day. But, Evan popped in with a proposal too good to resist, hence I decided to outsource all the way.
- Were there any concerns you initially had using Quest for your proposal?
I think my main concern was the timeline, whether the helpers could deliver what I envisioned by the specified time. This was my top priority. Secondly, I was worried the props would not be prepared in time for the proposal. In terms of the app, Evan was easily contactable through Whatsapp so there weren’t any problems. Since the proposal required a bit of manpower and logistics, I figured that not many helpers can provide this service, but Evan quickly addressed my concerns.
- Where and when was the proposal?
The proposal was on 25 December, as it was our anniversary of getting together officially. I chose Science Center as the proposal venue as I wanted to utilise our Singapore Rediscover vouchers. Plus, there’s good greenery and quiet spaces to take good photos. Bonus: The Ecogarden with a treehouse makes it more unique and memorable.
- Run us through the proposal day itself. What happened and how did our Hero help out?
The proposal day itself was pretty smooth, everything we had in mind was nicely carried out. I brought Paik Yen around the Science Center to visit the attractions before bringing her to our secret location. Evan and team went in early, set up the props, waited for us till the end of the day, which was when the actual event started. They also stuck around to make sure that nothing went wrong and that the props were secured, which was very assuring. During the actual proposal, Evan passed me the bouquet discreetly before I brought my fiance to the treehouse. The best part was Evan managed to capture the video of moments leading up to the actual proposal, like a professional. That video was my fiance’s favorite part!
Check out the proposal video filmed by Evan below.
- Overall, how was your experience engaging our Hero in the planning process?
It was a very pleasant experience and the helpers were really professional. Evan and team did their research and presented the best options to me, based on my requirements. If my friends or family have any future events of which they need help in, I will recommend them Quest!
Now that you’ve heard one side of the story, it’s time to hear from the POV of our Citizen, who is none other than our CEO, Evan Chow.
Nothing speaks knowing the inside and out of your product more than using it right?
- What made you take on the quest?
Well, it was actually my girlfriend who wanted to complete the quest at first. She had always wanted to be a wedding planner. When she saw the opportunity to help out, she went all out to fulfill her childhood dream. She made slide decks, proposing ideas from possible proposal venues down to the nitty-gritty details like the kind of bouquets to get, the type of decorations to put up. Seeing how she was so excited to execute her ideas, I had to come onboard this quest as a supportive partner.
- How did you feel being part of the planning process?
I’m very humbled and honoured to be part of this magical day for this couple. When the idea of Quest app was first conceptualised, I didn’t expect such unique quests to surface so this particular quest really opened my eyes to the potential of our app in reaching out to people who need help, no matter how arbitrary the request may seem.
- How was the preparation process like on the proposal day?
In the morning, my girlfriend and I went to get a fresh bouquet of roses, before heading towards the Science Center. Once there, we went straight to the Tree House and got down to business. We decorated the area and made sure that no one was there, 30 mins before the proposal. Then, James signalled to me that they were about to reach the venue. We got the hint, and followed closely behind the couple. Just before they went into the Tree House, I passed the bouquet to James and whipped out my camera to film the moment.
- What was the most memorable moment for you when you were helping out?
I vividly remember filming the part where James got down on his knees and that was actually the first time I saw someone propose. Getting to witness that moment was really special.
TLDR; James said Yes to Quest and Paik Yen said Yes to him! Here’s to an everlasting marriage for the lovebirds and more meaningful endeavours for the Quest team!
